On September 19th, 2008 Hershel was beaten to death by his grandson Leonard Martin Badenhorst. This was Tammy's son that she had adopted out when he was 4 years old.

Hershel Fleming, 79, Milford, died at 4:10 p.m. Sept. 19, 2008, at his home. He was born Feb. 26, 1929, in Booneville, Miss., the son of Thomas Blanchard and Nora Ridge Fleming. He married Lillian Baynes in Piggott, Ark., Sept. 24, 1949. She died Dec. 8, 2006. He served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict, was a rolling mill operator for U.S. Gypsum in Chicago, and was a member of the Hartford, Mich., American Legion. He is survived by one daughter, Tammy Novy, Milford; one brother, Travis Fleming, Coloma, Mich.; one sister, Lillian Ratliff, O'Fallon, Mo.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at Knapp Funeral Home in Milford. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Neil Larimore officiating.
